The article reports on a qualitative study in Philadelphia which focused on the school experiences and marginalization of transgender youth. The study's interview tool covered 14 areas, including demographics, sexual assault, body modification, and drug use. The students interviewed reported discrimination, abuse, and lack of support from peers, teachers and staff. Trans youth also had concerns about dress codes, bathroom and locker facilities, and school sports. Their recommendations to prevent transphobia and create safe learning environments are presented for educators and school administrators.

In this article the author argues that the Canadian judiciary, while affirming and protecting adults' right not to be discriminated against on the grounds of sexual orientation, has not done so to the same extent in the case of adolescents and children. And the few cases in which youth's rights related to sexual orientation have been implicated have usually been characterized as conflicts between the rights of adults and institutions, often based on religious belief. Judicial recognition of the right to freedom from discrimination based on sexual orientation in the school context, moreover, has been tied to what the author terms an inappropriate belief/conduct dichotomy that establishes too high a threshold, endangering the rights and even mental wellbeing and physical safety of students. The author expresses the need for proactive curricular measures that would affirm and reinforce for all the worth and dignity of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth.

The article reports that five members of Soulforce, a group that sponsors a two-month tour of 32 colleges, most of them conservative religious institutions, to protest what the group regards as discriminatory policies against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender students, were arrested on trespassing charges in March 2007 at Oklahoma Baptist University after they walked onto the campus to talk to students about the university's policy against homosexual activity. Activists have also been arrested at the University of Notre Dame, Central Bible College, and Wisconsin Lutheran College.
